Ashwagandha is the common name for Withania somnifera, a shrub in the Solanaceae family, also known in English as “winter cherry”. In supplements it is most often supplied as dried root powder or as a concentrated root extract, frequently standardised by its withanolide content. The raw material may be presented as capsules, tablets, loose powder for mixing, or liquid extracts, depending on the manufacturer’s specification. In cosmetics it appears as a botanical root extract, where the usual INCI name is “Withania Somnifera Root Extract”, and it may be carried in glycerin, water, or lipid carriers. On labels you may also see the Latin botanical name, or notes indicating extraction ratio (e.g., 5:1) and the plant part used (root).
